Malan Breton Fashion Week 9/12 2007 Pete Wentz

I got to Style Lounge at about 10am on the day of Malan’s show and Pete Wentz was there and had been there I was told since 9am working on a show of his own. He worked straight through to Malan’s show and then stayed and sat in the front row. His cool lounge Angels and Kings / AK-47 is the ground floor of my building here in NYC so it was funny seeing him there. He is a very sweet person. AK-47 is a great place with really nice people working there. Come by and have a drink sometime.
So in the mix of Pete and the camera crew Malan Breton was preparing for his stunning Fashion Week show. The usual missing model drama that so many designers have happened but didn’t stop the show. Melrose, wrongfully called bitchy by ANTM was an angel helping and trying on the fashions to fill in for the missing girl and when a model had a bad cough had some friendly folks go out and get her some tea. Every time I have met her Melrose has been amazing and sweet, I think the America’s Next Top Model season she appeared in just needed a villain and played up the stress to make her look like that kind of person via editing but from my experiences with her it’s NOT true. Project Runway seemed to try to make Malan into a bad boy and the opposite is true he is one of the sweetest people you’ll ever meet. No sewing from me this time I have some cool art projects you’ll hear about soon-ish that have been swamping me (happily so). I feel lucky to have him in my life and as part of my family in this world.
These are my pix and vidz from the event mainly before and during from backstage.

Taylor DiSantisSpeaking of Sweet Charity check out this cool story (and others!).

    Sweet charity

Watching the excesses described on the MTV reality show “My Super Sweet 16” last summer led St. Joseph Central High School sophomore Taylor DiSantis to turn his 16th birthday party on March 3 into a fundraiser for teen activities.

DiSantis, with help from fellow St. Joseph’s students Ryan Storie, Eric Kulpa, Jessica Healy and Courtney Failla, raised $2,200 that they plan to use to provide financial and other mentoring assistance for Berkshire County youngsters between the ages of 5 and 18. More than 100 teens from four high schools attended DiSantis’ party, which took place at the Sons of Italy’s Itam Lodge.

“I was expecting $1,000 at best,” DiSantis said.

    Introducing Prom Queen.TV

promx.jpgCheck it out here: Prom Queen TV

    Gear Live reports:
Michael Eisner, former CEO of Disney, has announced the formation of Vuguru, a studio that will develop what they claim will be a “slickly written, produced, and acted Web video about love, gossip and betrayal.” In other words, his investment company, The Tornate, will be producing a professionally made YouTube soap opera.

Eisner feels that although YouTube has won the first battle in Internet TV, real media moguls will ultimately win the broadband war. His first show will be “Prom Queen,” a who-done-it with daily 90-second installments beginning April 2. You will find all 80 episodes on Vuguru.com, Ellegirl.com (a “Prom Queen” sponsor,) Veoh, and of course, YouTube.

0043.jpgSpoto juniors step in to help Chamberlain seniors

A Chamberlain High School teacher was accused of embezzling almost $10,000 from the north Tampa school’s senior class prom fund.

The Spoto junior class realizes the importance of the senior prom. They have decided to forego their junior prom to save money for next year’s senior prom. Spoto opened in August and has no graduating class this year.

Lindsay Landram, a Spoto teacher and the junior-class adviser, called Chamberlain with one question: What can we do to help?

When Shopping Put Your Camera To Use

z35665810.jpgWhen I see a great tip I love to share it. This one makes such perfect sense! The article itself, from Huntington News, is not all fashion related, but has great tips for putting your camera to use.
The shopping tip was wonderful and one you should consider. Check out the article for more cool tips in all kinds of situations. So if you were thinking about buying a camera maybe just the thought of heading out for the hectic adventure that prom shopping is then this might make you go get one.
Then think of all the fun pix you can take on Prom night too!

Buying a prom dress is a huge production that can leave a girl with a pile of discarded dresses on the floor and a mind swirling with choices. Does dress No. 14 look better than dress No. 3? Can you remember? To make sure, have someone photograph you in each dress so that you can compare.

A Guide To Your Perfect Prom

158816551501_aa180_sclzzzzzzz_.jpgCheck out these great tips on how to make your prom night fun and less stressful. This is a great article from Courier Journal and it’s an interview with Joanna Saltz, executive style editor of Seventeen magazine. She is quite an expert since you can say she literally “wrote the book”. That book is “Seventeen’s Guide to Your Perfect Prom — A Planner & Scrapbook”. Check it out!

There’s no denying it, the prom is an enormous extravaganza for a high school student.

That’s why Joanna Saltz, executive style editor of Seventeen magazine, decided to write a book about one of the biggest nights of a teen’s life. It’s called “Seventeen’s Guide to Your Perfect Prom — A Planner & Scrapbook” (Hearst Communications, 2007, $14.95).

“Prom is a major milestone in a teenager’s life. … It is such a huge thing for a lot of our readers,” Saltz said. “Part of the mission with this book is to make sure that our readers understand that there is a lot of planning that goes into it, but it doesn’t have to be stressful.”

    The History of Homecoming

Dartmouth Bonfire: Homecoming is a tradition that has grown slowly through the decades. It is a time when students from different classes gather together to celebrate school spirit. In 1888, students from all four classes of Dartmouth College in New Hampshire built a bonfire to celebrate a baseball victory.
The Daily Dartmouth wrote: “It disturbed the slumbers of a peaceful town, destroyed some property, made the boys feel that they were being men, and in fact did no one any good.” Seven years later it was made official to celebrate class spirit. One visitor to the famed bonfire in 1914 was a young Winston Churchill.

    Casual Formal Wear for Guys

dressy-guys-lg-1.jpgCan’t get your guy in a tie? Check out this cool hoodie, yes a hoodie! Price: $45.
“Santa Monica, CA (PRWEB) For many high school and college students, proms and Spring formals are just around the corner. This year, there’s no excuse for not hitting the after parties in comfort and true nerd-chic style, with a brand new dressy casual black hoodie for men just released by www.NerdyShirts.com. This latest original shirt design offers a casual yet tasteful option for keeping both warm and fashionable.

The latest of the weekly, original shirt designs is a slim-fitting, zip-up, black hoodie (available only in men’s sizes), sporting a white printed-on “tie” for that “I don’t need to be stuffy to be classy” look. Now guys in this traditionally casual generation can lose the tux when they step off of the dance floor, and slip into comfort for the after-hours.”

    get_image.jpgPicture this: The winter formal

When a child is born with autism or Down syndrome, many of the special things in life are just not obtainable. Many of life’s milestones, like the first time you got behind the wheel, or that first kiss, are out of reach. But on this night, the staff at the South Bergen Jointure Middle/High School — with some help from the Rutherford Elks — were determined to make a memory for 40 kids that would last forever. The first-ever Winter Formal was a huge success.

    A Special Prom in Paradise

rfpalm.jpg I don’t think many people can resist the beauty of a Hawaiian themed event. Maybe more so when you live in an area where the weather can get very cold. A successful prom or party is one that can transport people to another place with its decorations and style.

This special prom had a Hawaiian theme and was meaningful on many levels. A memorable prom does not always happen in High School.

“The Combined Jewish Philanthropies’ eighth annual Senior Prom drew a multigenerational crowd Saturday night to jitterbug and shake it to music old and new. This year’s Hawaiian theme prompted many of the 200 residents and volunteers who attended the prom to don colorful leis and printed Hawaiian shirts for the event.”

    A Moonlight Serenade

ist1_227098_moonlight_city.jpgI like to acknowledge people like this who help make special events happen for special people. This is a Senior Citizen’s dance with a Moonlight Serenade Prom Theme. That’s a great theme idea for any Prom or Dance.

If you, your group or class does nice events like this ninth annual Senior Citizen Prom in Asbury Park, NJ, send me the news or website link and some pictures after the event. I hope these inspire others to do the same in their neighborhood and community.

“The prom draws the interest not only of seniors and students but also former students who return year after year to participate”, Ponti said. “The program was started, in part, because many seniors didn’t have an opportunity to attend their high school proms because of social and economic conditions at the time,” she said. Toni Ponti, one of the event’s coordinators.

    Inexpensive and Stylish

teen.jpgIf you are creative, inexpensive options can be just as pretty as higher priced fashions and accessories. Here is a big list of places you can start looking in your city. It can be a fun afternoon out on the weekend with friends wandering the thrift and vintage stores to see what might be tucked in these shops. Plus there are online vintage sources to browse through.

“CosmoGIRL Magazine fashion director Tara McBratney suggests finding a simple slip dress to pair with a “cool, wild shoe and a sequined brooch in a bright color,” for example.
Think you have the matching earrings, bracelet, necklace and bag to look like a glamour queen? Do as the stars do. Pick one focal point and make it memorable like actress Scarlett Johansson did at the Oscars with her diamond star tiara. If you have a big dress with lots of detail or sequins, you don’t need a glitzy necklace or a sparkly purse, only a long pair of nice earrings, McBratney said.”

Vintage and thrift stores are also great sources for alternative or themed fashion. If your prom is going to have a 1950’s theme for example, then you just might find a genuine poodle skirt from the 1950’s. You can’t get more authentic than that! Have fun searching for vintage gowns and party dresses and keep an eye out for fashions you can add to your everyday wardrobe. Many of these shops benefit charities so you could very well be helping your community while helping yourself and that’s a cool thing. Vintage gown photo by Dan Henry

Little Girls, Just Want to Have Fun

sw-267_lg.jpgLittle girls, maybe it’s safe to say, especially little girls, love to imagine being dressed like princesses in pretty gowns and dancing at night under twinkling lights. I think it’s wonderful that there are events where a little girl can get dressed up and dance like her big sister at the prom. Photo, The Perfect Pear

Here was one story in the news about a Daddy and Daughter Sweetheart Dance in Casper WY. A formal dance event for dads and daughters that raised money for a local charity.

There was also a 10th Annual Douglas County OR, Father Daughter Dance formal event with an Under Sea theme. The point of these events is to encourage the bond between fathers and daughters, which is a great thing.

Palmdale’s Senior Project Gift of Dance

Seniors from Palmdale High School CA, have a senior project where they give a Winter Ball for special education students. It is the only school in the Antelope Valley Union High School District that does this.

“The Winter Ball is an annual event that has been organized by seniors as part of their senior project, a graduation requirement.
‘We are just giving them a prom so they can do normal things like we get to do,” said Jessica Pierik, one of three seniors who planned the event. “They are just sweet little kids. I thought I could just help and make them happy.’

This year’s formal event was attended by 80 special education students who had a memorable night. They had music, dancing and dinner. The attendees had their pictures taken and even crowned a king and queen with sashes, tiara and crown. How much did this cost?
“The students did not have to pay for anything. The school club Special Falcons raised money to cover the costs, Recentio said.” Maybe this will inspire other senior class clubs to do something this special.

If you’d like to help someone have a great prom or formal dance you might not be able to throw a free event but you can donate gowns and formal wear.. Check out this list and see if your area is listed, if not, check your local news to see if they announce a location to donate gowns.
