What is Vintage? Essentially, ‘vintage’ is just another name for second-hand clothing, but it can be expensive. Antique flapper dresses from the 1920s and original Raoul Dufy designs are gorgeous, but discovering unique pieces doesn’t have to be expensive.

Thrift Shopping If your funds are limited, but you are adventurous, try thrift store shopping. It sometimes takes effort, depending on how the shop is set up and organized, but the results can be very rewarding. My most recent finds were a full length Eileen Fisher silk skirt and a vintage Valentino Boutique Couture Blouse (tags still on) for $17.00, total. Another trip netted me several silk designer scarves (Echo, Ferragamo, Valentino, Liberty of London among them) for $20.00 total for the bagful. Even if I had the money for these at retail, I would choose to spend those 100’s of dollars on other things. I love owning a beautiful designer piece, but love even more that I own them, and spent so little.

The List The key to a successful shopping trip is to go with a piece (or pieces) in mind, otherwise it can be overwhelming. Do you need a skirt for a special event, a belt to freshen up a t-shirt and jeans look, or a silk blouse to brighten a dull business suit? This way you can scan shelves and racks for the colors and textiles you want, and only pull those items out. It is safe to say, if you are looking for a black slip dress, you can skip the obvious yellow neon plaid and green striped numbers.

Choose Well Build up a list of ideas whenever you go out and come up with your own thrift shopping rules. Steer clear of anything stained rather than just a little dusty, and things with the strong scent of mothballs should be avoided because that scent will never come out 100%. Tiny holes can be mended if they are not very visible, you want to look good not like a little rag doll (unless that is your personal look). Fabric and pattern choices should fit your current wardrobe if you want to incorporate it in everyday use. Choose the wilder looks for parties and special events.

Patience Give yourself time. You may not find the perfect piece the first time, or the second, but the third time you might. Take the time to build a perfect wardrobe. Explore the shops and flea markets and if you find yourself frequenting one shop, introduce yourself to the owner and ask if they will give you a call the minute new things come in.

Accessories If you’re still unsure about ’second-hand clothes’, just shop for accessories. Bags, belts and scarves are easily incorporated into an everyday wardrobe. Finding pretty pieces sometimes takes as much dedication as scanning for clothing, but when you find that perfect pair of 1960’s pink rhinestone basket earrings for $2.00 you’ll be converted. Then you just might look around and take a chance on a new ruffled tuxedo shirt or a fun 1970’s mini skirt, and you’ll never see shopping the same way again. Look at it this way, it’s closet of fashion you can raid without mom and grandmom getting mad at you!

Socially Responsible Shopping Thrifting and vintage shopping is also a great way to recycle. With so many beautiful fashions in thrift and vintage shops you may be able to find what you need and in essence recycle a well-made garment. If the current trends aren’t your taste, you may find past looks in great condition. If you are like me, and dress to express yourself, not follow the trends to the letter, then I think you’ll be very happy. Many thrift shops benefit charities too, so in some cases just by shopping, you’ll be doing a good deed. Just get out there and look!
In a recent news item she says vintage clothes are not only glorious, but a great way to recycle. Thandie is known for her passion in making the world greener. Why buy new things when there are so many lovely fashions in vintage and thrift stores already? Her tastes may be vintage but her ideas are very modern.

Thandie Newton has said she can’t understand why people buy new clothes when there is so much great vintage material out there.
She said that she loves buying secondhand clothes because of the benefits for the environment: “It is grotesque how out of control manufacturing has become, and the excess, the pollution that’s caused by it.”
“Vintage [fashion] is not only glorious and stylish, it’s also the way forward in terms of recycling.”
“Whenever I go into great vintage stores, I wonder why we ever buy new things.” Source: fametastic.co.uk

Remember to check out Thandie in her new film Run Fatboy Run with Simon Pegg.

For your special night you want to look perfect. Your hair is your crowning glory so find out what colors look good with your skintone.

Julianne Moore
Skin Base: Light/Fair
Tone: Peach
Avoid ash tones as they have a tendency to make light skin even lighter and look washed out. Look for colors that are more vibrant as they will make your skin look radiant. Go for reds of any kind, golden blondes with reddish and caramel highlights. Warm coppers and browns will look great if they have a ginger or warm reddish tone.

Kirsten Dunst
Skin Base: Light/Fair
Tone: Pink
Avoid red tones as they will give your skin a ruddy look and only emphasize the redness in the skin. The ash colors will work with the pink tones in the skin as they offset the pink tone to soften the skin. Warm tones in the browns and blondes will complement and give a sun kissed glow to the skin. Try cool platinum, sandy, buttery, and most dark blondes. If you want to go brown, most will work as long as you do not let them get too warm or red.

Jennifer Love-Hewitt
Skin Base: Medium
Tone: Pink
Ash tones and cool reds (reds with caramel highlights or auburn reds) will complement best. Always remember, when trying to complement pink skin tone, it is best to stay away from vibrant colors and brassy or gold tones. This means your best colors may be light and dark auburns, frosty or sandy blondes, and caramel browns.

Eva Mendes
Skin Base: Medium
Tone: Olive/Yellow
Warm reds and golds look fabulous here! This skin tone pops when paired with colors which are more vibrant. Spice up your look with colors like cayenne or pumpkin reds, or butterscotch blondes. You can go with subtle or heavy highlighted colors. Rich colors look wonderful here as well. Try dark brown or ginger brown. Warm and gold tones work best. Basically, this skin tone can wear just about anything, but avoid ash tones!

Beyonce Knowles
Skin Base: Medium
Tone: Neutral
You will find that most tones look good on this skin tone as well. There are little restrictions here. Try to avoid ash tones as they will only make neutral skin look bland. Since the sky is the limit here, you can have fun and experiment with any color!

Naomi Campbell
Skin Base: Dark
Tone: Red
Natural tones work best to bring out the radiance in this skin tone. In this case, warm and neutral tones will work to enhance the natural color in the skin. Colors like dark, medium and lights browns (keep them on the reddish side), honey ginger, medium reds, and auburns will work great here. Definitely avoid the ash colors and brassy or gold tones.

Iman
Skin Base: Dark
Tone: Olive
Avoid ash tones as they do not work well with dark or olive skin. You want to compliment the skin and not neutralize it. However, you will find that most tones look good. Olive is complimented nicely by most colors. Have fun with this and go from blonde to brunette in a flash! The important thing here is to take advantage of your ability to wear any color.

Think of how cool you’ll look at a wedding or formal event (maybe even an event at a future job with your boss looking on wondering who to promote..) when everyone else dances in a certain style and all your friends have to sit and watch but you get out there and look cool. This might be something to look into in your neighborhood.

Before long, the sound of “Mambo No. 5″ pulsated through the cafeteria and the room became a blur of twirling skirts and swaying hips. The teenagers, used to hip-hop dancing or not dancing at all, were swept up in swing fever.

Dancing up a storm
To cut down on ‘bumping and grinding,’ Bel Air High School offers free lesson to teens
By Cassandra A. Fortin

The teenagers drank punch and munched on snacks until, summoned by the instructor, they sheepishly made their way onto the makeshift dance floor.

They formed a circle in the cafeteria at Bel Air High School. Matthew Lipka,18, adjusted his tie as he found an open spot.

“I have no idea what to expect,” the senior said.

Before long, the sound of “Mambo No. 5″ pulsated through the cafeteria and the room became a blur of twirling skirts and swaying hips. The teenagers, used to hip-hop dancing or not dancing at all, were swept up in swing fever.

“Slow, slow, quick, quick,” instructor Debbie Howley chanted into a microphone from the middle of the circle. “Rock back on one foot and come forward on the other. Now, gentlemen, lift your arm, and ladies, turn.”

About 30 students showed up for the recent session, designed to expose them to more traditional dance styles. Despite their initial trepidation, the teens took to the new styles quickly.

“That was a lot of fun,” said Griffy Tanenbaum, an 18-year-old senior. “It was really easy to learn.”

The idea for the session came from a school staff member who was alarmed by the dance styles he saw at dances that he chaperoned.

“Most adults would agree that the bumping and grinding way that teens dance is inappropriate,” said Robert Neumer, one of the school’s guidance counselors. “But it’s not enough to just tell the kids not to dance like that. I think they need appropriate alternatives.”

Neumer, a former minister, talked with Howley last fall, both taking a dim view of the way today’s teenagers dance. Howley, who with Tom Rzepnicki runs a instructional program called Dancing With Friends out of the Bel Air Armory, suggested teaching dance styles that are simple and upbeat and would appeal to teenagers, Howley said.

“Ballroom dancing gives students a chance to become more confident and at ease with members of the opposite sex,” said Howley, a Forest Hill resident.

The free lesson was divided into one hour of jitterbug and an hour of salsa. Girls were asked to wear skirts or dresses, and the boys wore ties, dress shirts and dress shoes.

“We wanted the students to not only learn to dance appropriately but to dress appropriately,” Neumer said.

The students said they had varied reasons for attending.

Heather Kurtzman wanted to learn dance steps that would help her stand out at the senior prom next month.

“The dances break up the slow and fast steps,” the 17-year-old said. “I am used to doing whatever everyone else does. So learning dance steps that go with the music, and not the crowd, is a lot of fun.”

Though she found switching partners during the course of the dance a little tricky, Heather caught on quickly. Teaching youths to dance with multiple partners is part of the process, Howley said.

“A big part of learning ballroom dancing is helping people overcome their inhibitions,” she said. “People may not start out as friends, but I teach them to enjoy the ride as they learn.”

Griffy said she, too, wanted to improve her skills.

“I came to learn how to dance so that my dance partner and I will look like Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire at the prom,” she said. “I like this kind of dancing. The dances we learned tonight have actual dance steps that both you and your partner can do together.”

Her dance partner, Seth Marple, is not looking to become a dance master, but he wants to learn at least the basics.

“I go to weddings a lot, and the people are doing all kinds of things on the dance floor,” said Seth, 17. “I want to learn to do dance steps that everyone else doesn’t know. I actually wasn’t sure if I would like it, but I do.”

Teens tend to pick up ballroom dancing more easily than adults, Rzepnicki said.

“They don’t have a lot of barriers,” he said. “When they come for a lesson, kids walk in and say, ‘Let’s do this.’ But when adults come for a lesson, they have 50 reasons why they can’t learn to dance.”

Halfway through the session, the dancers switched to the salsa. By then, some of the boys had rotated their ties to hang down their backs and unbuttoned their collars. When their high heels became uncomfortable, some girls adjusted, one going barefoot and another switching to slippers.

“It’s a long night, and some people find the dress shoes uncomfortable after wearing them for an hour,” Howley said.

The decorum of dancing is another important lesson that the teens learn, Howley said.

“The gentlemen learn to invite a lady to dance and feel comfortable and confident when they do it,” she said. “The ladies learn to accept a dance invitation and to handle herself with poise.”

At its most basic, ballroom dancing is a social activity, a seemingly vanishing experience for modern teens, Rzepnicki said.

“They can’t form a relationship in front of a television set or playing video games,” he said. “And it gives them a chance to experience a dance with people who have a love of dance.”

When it comes to low necklines and high hems, Sucro said, “Most reputable stores will have prom gowns that are appropriate. This is the time to say, ‘I’m going to let her look more glamorous.’” She reminds mothers that as long as you are paying for the dress, you still have some say in the style, but ultimately, the person wearing the gown should be completely happy with the purchase.

She may never make it as a bank robber because of her aversion to pantyhose.

As proof, here’s a recent conversation overheard through a dressing-room door at Deb clothing shop in Stroud Mall:

“You’ll need pantyhose.”

“No, I won’t.”

“They’ll make your legs look nice.”

“Don’t care.”

“You can’t wear a dress like that without hose.”

“Don’t care.”

“I’m not buying the dress unless you agree to wear hose.”

“Don’t care.”

It was a mother-daughter shopping duo on the prowl for a prom dress, and the exchange hinted at tension instead of eager prom anticipation.

Ramona Sullivan, co-owner of Bridal Creations by Ramona on Main Street, Stroudsburg, says girls tend to shun hose, possibly because they want to show off a pedicure.

She also says that the mother-daughter dynamics of shopping are subtle.

Mom says, “Get whatever you want,” but if Daughter lands on a dress Mom does not like, she may say, “Well, are you sure?” or “You should look around a little more.”

Sullivan says mothers are sometimes happier than daughters when the perfect gown is found “because they can stop shopping.”

Today’s prom-going gal, just like generations before her, knows what she wants, and often it is not what Mom has in mind.

Beth Sucro, a family therapist at Pocono Therapeutic Services in Tannersville, says shopping for prom dresses is a great bonding opportunity.

“Most mothers have control issues, which can be a good thing. But this is a good time to get in the back seat and let your daughter take more control of the situation.”

KEEPING MOM AND THE PROM IN SYNC
Tannersville therapist Beth Sucro’s tips for prom shopping mothers and daughters:

• Look through a magazine before you go to get a sense of style preference.

• Set a reasonable maximum price limit before you go shopping.

• Consider bringing a friend or hip adult whose opinion you trust.

• Expect your daughter’s alter ego to come out.

• Make a day of it. Don’t try to get it done in 45 minutes.

• Wear comfortable shoes.

• Plan to have lunch.

• If a dress your daughter loves looks bad, elicit the help of a sales person.

• If you give an opinion, give options — for example, “Which of these three dresses do you prefer?”

• Make it a memory.

THIS YEAR’S PROM FASHIONS
Ramona Sullivan, co-owner of Bridal Creations by Ramona in Stroudsburg, says while fuller skirts are always in for formals, straight lines are flattering and popular. The newest look is charmuse, a light, smoothly tactile fabric with sheen that creates sophisticated lines. Also popular are dresses with a gentle bustle effect all around the skirt and open back cuts. Tulle skirts are softer to the touch and less poofy than in years past. Tulle gives an instant princess effect. Hot colors for formals include a light olive green, red and pink.

We have no date. We have no money. We cannot dance. We’ve never worn a tux or a ball gown. We are too fat. We are too skinny. We are too ugly. The list goes on and on encyclopedically. And each day brings it 24 hours nearer, as all around us the excitement rises like an ocean tide in which we will undoubtedly drown, socially obliterated and globally warmed.

Skinny, klutzy kids always have dreaded the senior prom
Carl Larsen Petty Larseny

It looms on the high school horizon, ominous as an algebra final and as huge as a nose pimple. It seems as distant as the front of the cafeteria food line, yet creeps steadily ever nearer.

It is the dreaded senior prom. At many local high schools, plans for the prom are already well under way, and for some young socialites (the “With-It Crowd,” of course) the event will doubtlessly be the crowning cherry atop a four-year cruise through education.

Rented tuxes, corsages and stretch limos float through the fantasies of the Socially Accepted, and all I can say is: One person’s vision of rapture is another guy’s nightmare.

For to those of us (the majority, I fear) who have inhabited the great lumbering herd of clueless, classless, klutzy everyday students, the senior prom is just another opportunity to publicly display our embarrassing ineptness at attempting anything remotely resembling civilized.

Ah, how one’s heart goes out to all those young people who must traverse this strange rite of passage. Do your best, my children! Buck up, stumble through it and be assured that the next day it will be just a horrible dream.

Back in my day, things were, of course, better. And even though I was as void of social graces as an average wart hog, the senior prom at Torrance High School was as much fun for me and the rest of the debate team as it was for any of the really cool kids.

Our beloved school principal, realizing that 90 percent of the students were mere clods such as I, simply rented the massive Student Union building at nearby El Camino College, announced that the senior prom was going to be an all-night, come-as-you-are, no-formal-date class party, and threw open the doors to everyone. Why, even the teachers were invited.

And although a few fuddy-duddies complained, most of us deemed it total redemption. Slowly, painfully, we learned a little dance floor courtesy whilst Patti Page, Hank Williams and Frank Sinatra crooned into our freshly washed ears.

Best of all, for that one endless magical night, everyone in the senior class — from the football heroes and fashionistas down to us geeks and grubs — was completely equal in every way.

I still cherish it.

Some parents are outraged over junior prom souvenirs. Copper Hills High School students are getting glassware that look like beer mugs and champagne glasses. That’s what Gary Davis’ son brought home from school after he bought his prom tickets. Davis says, “I was shocked, appalled that this type of material was given out by the school to underage kids.” Concerned parents say these glasses send a mixed – and dangerous – message to high school students.

Watching the excesses described on the MTV reality show “My Super Sweet 16″ last summer led St. Joseph Central High School sophomore Taylor DiSantis to turn his 16th birthday party on March 3 into a fundraiser for teen activities.

DiSantis, with help from fellow St. Joseph’s students Ryan Storie, Eric Kulpa, Jessica Healy and Courtney Failla, raised $2,200 that they plan to use to provide financial and other mentoring assistance for Berkshire County youngsters between the ages of 5 and 18. More than 100 teens from four high schools attended DiSantis’ party, which took place at the Sons of Italy’s Itam Lodge.

“I was expecting $1,000 at best,” DiSantis said.

Bradley, whose daughter is going to the prom, said that when she asked a sales clerk at one dress shop, she discovered only one of hundreds of gowns at the store had something resembling sleeves.

Erika got so frustrated with the low-cut, sleeveless styles she kept encountering that she took up an offer from Ellen Timmreck, one of her mother’s friends, to sew her a dress.

Thursday night, Timmreck, armed with pins and a ruler, inspected the hemline on Erika’s gown, preparing for final adjustments.

Review from Amazon:
“21 PROMS tells the stories of, well, twenty-one proms. Twenty-one fantastic authors contributed to this collection, and each and every one of the stories is fabulous and enjoyable. A few, however, really stick out in my mind after finishing this book.

Holly Black’s IN VODKA VERITAS is a creepy story about an evil Latin club. “MOM CALLED, SHE SAID YOU HAVE TO GO TO PROM” is Adrienne Maria Vrettos’ contribution to the book. It’s a great story that manages, in just a few pages, to create wonderfully three-dimensional characters that I’d love to read more about. BETTER BE GOOD TO ME by Daniel Ehrenhaft is a brilliantly written and romantic story. Aimee Friedman’s THREE FATES is a hilarious story about what happens when Abby ends up with three dates instead of going dateless the way she thought she would. THE QUESTION is Brent Hartinger’s one-act play that would be wonderful to see performed. PRIMATE THE PROM is Libba Bray’s very interesting, original, and unusual story of a boy going to prom with his boyfriend — who just happens to be a gorilla. THE BACKUP DATE, by Leslie Margolis, is a fabulously well-written story about Jasmine, a whiny but completely believable character, going to prom with her boyfriend and brother’s best friend.

As you can see, there are quite a few fabulous stories in this collection. The two that I loved the most, however, were these: Melissa de la Cruz told the absolutely true and absolutely hilarious story of her prom in A SIX-PACK OF BUD, A FIFTH OF WHISKEY, AND ME. THE GREAT AMERICAN MORP is John Green’s absolutely brilliant story and one of my two favorites about a couple of girls having a “morp,” a party that is a backwards prom. In this funny and fantastic story, he introduces characters that I’d absolutely love to see again.

I did notice one thing that is interesting, and I want to know why this is: people seem much more likely to write about two gay guys than two lesbians. Quite a few of the stories had gay guys in them, but I can’t think of any about two girls who wanted to go to prom together; I don’t know why. In fact, I can only think of one book that I’ve read where the main character is a lesbian: KEEPING YOU A SECRET, by Julie Anne Peters.

A good short story, one that has good characters or a hold-your-breath-suspenseful plot or something, has to do it in just a few pages. These were some of the best short stories I can ever remember reading!”

Armed with fashion, Spring looks at bargain prices at Salvation Army fashion show
By Patrice Stewart pstewart@decaturdaily.com

Maythion Casteel of Falkville got his first chance as a fashion model Saturday and bought the Brooks Brothers suit he wore for just $6.

To brighten the black suit, he spent another $3 for a purple dress shirt by D’Amante.

This bargain buy and others could have been yours if you moved quickly after the fashion show presented by the Salvation Army’s thrift store in Decatur.

This event drew models of all ages and genders who put together nearly 70 outfits to showcase spring looks available at next-to-nothing prices. It was held in the Salvation Army gym next to the thrift store on 14th Street Southwest.

“This is the first fashion show we’ve ever had,” said coordinator Tina Henderson, thrift store manager, who wanted to show off the many types of second-hand items available in the store. She enlisted Carolyn Patterson, caseworker and thrift store manager in Athens, to announce the models and describe the outfits.

Henderson said she began recruiting family members and friends, such as Casteel, her brother, to be sure she would have enough models, and then others began arriving at the store to volunteer as word got around. Models got $5 gift certificates to purchase clothing afterward.

Some didn’t get to use their certificates on what they modeled, however.

“A lady was wanting my blue denim dress with jacket as soon as I got off the runway,” said Edna Garrett of Athens, so she let her have the $3.75 set by Denim and Co.

Garrett said she shops and volunteers at Salvation Army thrift stores in both Decatur and Athens.

“A lady came up to me in Wal-Mart the other day and said my blouse was pretty, and I told her I got it at the Salvation Army store,” she said.

Casteel figures he’s ready for spring, church and other dressy occasions with his new ensemble. “I thought it looked good when I picked it out,” he said, and he modeled in black dress shoes he got at the thrift store several years ago.

While 9-year-old Tonya Ervin of Decatur modeled an Easter dress, she kept her eye out for casual attire others were showing and afterward scoured the racks for several pieces she liked. She came up with khaki Union Bay Capri pants and a String Bean print shirt, just $2 each, and then added a beige string sweater for $2.50 to complete the look.

Kayla Elkins, 9, modeled a white satin dress decorated with lace, pearls and embroidery and a tulle overlay over a long skirt.

“She’s going to be in a wedding, so I’m buying it for her for $10,” said her mom, Glenda Elkins of Hartselle, who was pleased with that bargain. It probably cost $100 to $150 new.

“We love to shop here; we’re always in here looking,” Elkins said. “This is the first time Kayla has been in a fashion show, and she really enjoyed it.”

Several of the teen models eyed gowns they could wear to their proms.

Kim Little of Decatur modeled a blue and black formal backless gown, and she also chose a silver-embroidered shirt by Joseph A. for a mere $2 and was looking for pants to match.

“I shop here all the time; this is where most of my clothes come from,” she said.

Tyeshia Jones of Decatur does, too, and often, because her mom works in the store. On the runway, the 15-year-old showed off a rose-colored evening gown with silver beading; the Adrianna Papell design was priced at $3.75.

Prom preview

“I’m going to buy it to wear to the Decatur High prom,” she said, as she also checked out a purple evening gown.

Whitney Bukszar, 15, of Somerville modeled a pink prom-style gown and then went casual in jeans and a turquoise sequin-trimmed top over a tan insert that showed at top and bottom.

“My grandmother goes to church here, and I’ve come here my whole life,” she said, both for church and, on other days, to shop.

Bukszar said she thinks it’s a good place for teens to find mix-and-match pieces and dresses they can afford, and on Saturday she headed into the thrift shop afterward because many items were on sale for $1.

For some, the event became a family outing. Sonia and Sergio Bibiano of Decatur had family and extended family members in the show, including Kimberly, 1, Eddy Roberto and Estafani, 3, Jennifer, 6, and Lucero, 12.

Shane Casteel of Decatur, the show director’s nephew, chose green dress pants by Hanover Square and matched a green striped shirt by Botany 500. Wife Tonya was too busy backstage dressing their children to model, but she got 18-month-old Isaac into a $5 ivory-colored tuxedo, dress shirt and bow tie and 5-month-old Trey into a $2 blue checked john-john, decorated with teddy bear appliqué, and a white shirt by Guess.

Loveanna Hernandez of Athens showed off everything a 15-month-old might need to dress up for spring: a yellow and blue dress with butterflies, a lavender ensemble, and a black-and-white lace dress.

Cooking up some pre-prom food ideas
By MIKE O’BRIEN
WHATEVER STAFF WRITER, Star-Telegram

Most everyone loves the good food they serve at prom — especially if dinner is included. But whether you want to throw a pre-party, an after-party or even a midnight breakfast after the dance, here are some ways to coordinate your food with your school’s theme:

Theme: Hollywood style

Here’s a way to, um, celebrate celebrity “tarts” you might see if you were on the real red carpet in L.A.

PUDDING AND BERRY TART WITH GRAHAM CRACKER CRUST

For the crust:

12 whole graham crackers

3/4 stick (6 tablespoons) butter 3 tablespoons dark brown sugar

For the pudding:

2 (3.4-ounce) packages “cook and serve” vanilla pudding

Milk (amount according to pudding package instructions)

For the topping:

1 pint fresh strawberries

1/2 pint fresh blueberries

1/2 pint fresh blackberries or raspberries

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

To make the crust: Crumble the graham crackers by hand or with a potato masher to get fine crumbs. Heat the butter in a saucepan or microwave until half-melted. Work the butter into the crumbs with your fingertips until the crumbs look like wet sand. Using your fingertips, press the crust into a 9-inch pie plate or disposable aluminum pie pan to make an even layer over the bottom and sides of the pan. Bake until the crust is a shade darker, about 12 minutes, and let cool completely.

To make the filling: Make the pudding according to the package directions. Let stand about 5 to 10 minutes stirring occasionally to keep a skin from forming on the top of the pudding. Use a spoon or rubber spatula to scrape the pudding into the graham cracker shell and smooth it into an even layer. Put the tart in the refrigerator until the pudding is chilled and set, at least 1 hour.

To make the topping: Cut the stems off the strawberries and wash with the other berries in a colander under cold water. Drain then spread out on paper towel to dry. You can either arrange the berries nicely over the pudding or just sort of gently tumble them onto it. Cover the tart lightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate.

You can make the tart up to 4 hours in advance. Serve cold. (Great for breakfast, too!)

Source: www.foodnetwork.com

RED CARPET

Ice cubes

3 ounces sour cherry syrup or 2 1/2 ounces grenadine and 1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice

One 2-liter bottle orange-flavored club soda

Orange slices and maraschino cherries for garnish

Theme: Island/Luau Theme

You don’t have to go all the way to Hawaii to transport your guests there. Just serve ‘em this light and fruity cake, and be sure to give ‘em a lei to wear around their neck at the party.

TROPICAL ISLAND BANANA CAKE

2 purchased angel food cakes (10 to 12 ounces each)

2 containers (16 ounces each) vanilla frosting

1 teaspoon imitation banana extract

Yellow food coloring

1 ripe banana, mashed

2 cups sweetened flaked coconut

1 cup chocolate morsels or chopped chocolate, melted

1 tube store-bought green icing

1 cup fruit-shaped candies

Special Equipment: 1 palm tree decoration, aluminum foil

Place one cake, wide side down, on a serving platter. Stir frosting and banana extract in a large bowl to blend. Stir in yellow food coloring, 1 drop at a time, until desired color is achieved. Transfer 1/2 cup of banana frosting to a medium bowl; stir in mashed banana. Spread mashed banana mixture over top of cake. Cut one (2-inch wide) wedge from second cake. Spread 1/4 cup of yellow frosting over cut ends of second cake. Bring cut ends of second cake together, pressing to adhere. Place second cake, wide side down, atop cake on platter. Tear cut cake wedge into cubes. Fill hole in center of cakes with cake cubes. Spread remaining yellow frosting evenly over top and sides of cake to coat completely. Sprinkle cake with coconut, pressing lightly to adhere.

Create an island “volcano” mold by shaping aluminum foil into a volcano shape, measuring 2 to 3 inches in diameter. Dip in melted chocolate and let cool and harden. Place the mold on top of the cake. Fill the center of the mold with green icing and smooth out. Place palm tree decoration inside the mold. Arrange fruit-shaped candy decoratively around the palm tree and base of cake.

Theme: Arabian Knights

You won’t need to be like Aladdin and have a magic genie-lamp to pull off this recipe.

INDIAN PUDDING

1 (3.4-ounce) box instant butterscotch pudding

1 (8.5-ounce) box instant corn muffin mix

6 cups milk, divided

3 eggs, lightly beaten

1/2 cup dark or robust molasses

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

Spray a 4-quart slow cooker with cooking spray; set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together pudding mix, corn muffin mix, and 3 cups of milk until thickened, about 2 to 3 minutes; set aside.

In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together remaining ingredients. Stir into pudding mixture until well combined. Transfer to slow cooker. Cover and cook on high for 1 hour. Turn slow cooker to low and stir. Cover and continue cooking for 1 more hour. Stir, cover and cook for 1 hour more.

Theme: Viva Italiano!

You’ll fool your friends into thinking you ordered in from their favorite Italian restaurant with this delicious appetizer!

BRUSCHETTA WITH CAPONATA

For the caponata:

1/4 cup olive oil

3 1/2 cups 1/4-inch dice unpeeled eggplant (about 1 1/4 pounds)

3/4 cup finely chopped onion

1/3 cup finely chopped celery

1/3 cup chopped pitted green olives

3 tablespoons chopped drained bottled capers

1/4 cup red wine vinegar

1 1/2 tablespoons sugar, or to taste

3 tablespoons golden raisins 3 tablespoons pine nuts, toasted lightly

3 plum tomatoes, cut into 1/4-inch dice (about 1 cup)

1/4 cup finely chopped flat-leafed parsley leaves

For the bruschetta:

8 to 12 (1/2-inch thick) diagonal slices of country-style Italian bread

Flat-leaf parsley sprigs, for garnish

To make the caponata: In a heavy skillet heat 2 tablespoons of the oil over moderatelyhigh heat until hot but not smoking. Cook the eggplant, stirring, for 3 to 5 minutes, or until it is tender, and transfer it to a bowl. To the skillet add the remaining 2 tablespoons oil and cook the onion and the celery over moderate heat, stirring, for 5 minutes. Add the olives, the capers, the vinegar, the sugar, the raisins, the pine nuts, and the tomatoes and cook the mixture, covered, stirring occasionally, for 5 to 10 minutes, or until it is cooked through and the celery is tender. Transfer to the bowl, cool, and chill, covered, overnight. Stir in the parsley and season the caponata with salt and pepper.

To make the bruschetta: Grill the bread on an oiled rack set about 4 inches over glowing coals for 1 minute on each side, brush the toasts on 1 side with the oil, and sprinkle them with salt, to taste.

Top each toast generously with some of the caponata, arrange 2 or 3 toasts on each of 4 plates, and garnish each serving with the parsley sprigs.

Theme: Havana Nights

Ay, caramba! These are easy! Just put the ingredients out, heat the griddle, and let everyone make their own!

CUBAN SANDWICHES

4 individual Cuban bread loaves

4 tablespoons butter

1 pound shaved roasted pork

1 pound shaved smoked ham

1/2 pound sliced Swiss cheese

1 cup sliced dill pickles

Preheat the griddle. Slice the bread loaves in half. Smear the butter on both sides of each loaf of bread. Build each sandwich with the roasted pork, ham, cheese and pickles. This one makes such perfect sense! The article itself, from Huntington News, is not all fashion related, but has great tips for putting your camera to use.
The shopping tip was wonderful and one you should consider. Check out the article for more cool tips in all kinds of situations. So if you were thinking about buying a camera maybe just the thought of heading out for the hectic adventure that prom shopping is then this might make you go get one.
Then think of all the fun pix you can take on Prom night too!
