Love what you see on the Red Carpet? Well you can have some of those looks for less. EW reports that designer “ALLEN B. SCHWARTZ came up with the idea of creating dresses that make women’s dreams come true at an affordable price.”
“From a fashion standpoint, I thought the show was good, not great,” says Schwartz, who has been interpreting red-carpet fashions for the past 15 to 20 years. “There were a few of what I would call ‘wow’ dresses. CAMERON DIAZ looked fantastic. CATE BLANCHETT was incredible. JENNIFER LOPEZ was fabulous, and PENÉLOPE CRUZ was a showstopper — that dress was incredible, but after that, I thought it was just average.”
Find his fashions at “at leading department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s and Lord & Taylor.”

The Magazine I mean. Of course the complaints reported in Gawker regarding a bad review on the blog Magazine Rack, have a point under all the cattiness. Would you like to see more plus-sized models in Prom Magazines? I think so because there are a lot of girls who are interested in prom fashion that are not model sized so why not show all the shapes and sizes of the buying public? Well expect more fun stuff on Gawker about Prom because they are subscribing to the magazine! Oh and yes I am one of Gawker’s Artists. I am glad they brought this up even if it wasn’t their intention to point this issue out I think Prom Magazines should show more diverse body types.

The Under the Sea Theme is so much fun! As reported by JamBase the band My Morning Jacket has a great Prom planned. Send me pictures for a theme album if you go!
“For all of you who missed your prom back in 1956 or 1986 or 2006 for that matter, My Morning Jacket will be hosting the 1st annual MMJ 2 night prom, March 6 and 7, at the fabulous, prom-ready, 40 Watt Club in Athens!
The first time we walked thru those hallowed 40 Watt doors we said to ourselves, “this place looks perfect for a prom!” And now the dream will be a reality. The theme is a futuristic/retro under the sea vibe – costumes (tuxes, suits, robots, mermaid and lobster costumes, anything prom/ocean related) are not only encouraged – they are MANDATORY!!! NO ONE will be admitted without proper attire!**
There will be cake, balloons, fishnets, classic cars, chaperones, spankings, and a whole lotta shakin goin on – 2007 style… Come prepared to dance the night away, and make up for all the proms you missed…”

Your school may have a budget for special events already, but if not, or your class wants something extra special, fundraising ideas can be creative and fun.
In this sweet news item, the Teddy Bear was part of a contest to raise money for a prom in a school in England. The Teddy obviously went on to make others happy. That’s the fun part of fundraising projects, you raise money, and make others happy along the way. Get creative, work hard and every dollar does something good. Photo, Ian Narin

I don’t think many people can resist the beauty of a Hawaiian themed event. Maybe more so when you live in an area where the weather can get very cold. A successful prom or party is one that can transport people to another place with its decorations and style.
This special prom had a Hawaiian theme and was meaningful on many levels. A memorable prom does not always happen in High School.
“The Combined Jewish Philanthropies’ eighth annual Senior Prom drew a multigenerational crowd Saturday night to jitterbug and shake it to music old and new. This year’s Hawaiian theme prompted many of the 200 residents and volunteers who attended the prom to don colorful leis and printed Hawaiian shirts for the event.”

I like to acknowledge people like this who help make special events happen for special people. This is a Senior Citizen’s dance with a Moonlight Serenade Prom Theme. That’s a great theme idea for any Prom or Dance.
If you, your group or class does nice events like this ninth annual Senior Citizen Prom in Asbury Park, NJ, send me the news or website link and some pictures after the event. I hope these inspire others to do the same in their neighborhood and community.
“The prom draws the interest not only of seniors and students but also former students who return year after year to participate”, Ponti said. “The program was started, in part, because many seniors didn’t have an opportunity to attend their high school proms because of social and economic conditions at the time,” she said. Toni Ponti, one of the event’s coordinators.

If you are creative, inexpensive options can be just as pretty as higher priced fashions and accessories. Here is a big list of places you can start looking in your city. It can be a fun afternoon out on the weekend with friends wandering the thrift and vintage stores to see what might be tucked in these shops. Plus there are online vintage sources to browse through.
“CosmoGIRL Magazine fashion director Tara McBratney suggests finding a simple slip dress to pair with a “cool, wild shoe and a sequined brooch in a bright color,” for example.
Think you have the matching earrings, bracelet, necklace and bag to look like a glamour queen? Do as the stars do. Pick one focal point and make it memorable like actress Scarlett Johansson did at the Oscars with her diamond star tiara. If you have a big dress with lots of detail or sequins, you don’t need a glitzy necklace or a sparkly purse, only a long pair of nice earrings, McBratney said.”
Vintage and thrift stores are also great sources for alternative or themed fashion. If your prom is going to have a 1950’s theme for example, then you just might find a genuine poodle skirt from the 1950’s. You can’t get more authentic than that! Have fun searching for vintage gowns and party dresses and keep an eye out for fashions you can add to your everyday wardrobe. Many of these shops benefit charities so you could very well be helping your community while helping yourself and that’s a cool thing. Vintage gown photo by Dan Henry

Have you ever thought of having a Prom Fashion Show? It is a lot of work but can be very beneficial to your class and to local businesses. It might be fun to model fashions while your friends either model with you or watch as local businesses show off what they sell. A lot of people may not even know what shops are in their own cities so this is helpful knowing what’s available in their neighborhood. Photo, semca.org
Seeing new fashions up close can save you a lot of time and money when trying to pick out the right thing to wear. Something might look pretty in a magazine, but in person you may not like it as much, or you may like it even more.
This can also be a great preparation for the Prom Planning Committee. You can find out who works hard and can be depended on and you’ll have a solid start to knowing who will do the best job when it comes to the actual Prom. Fun and hard work can mix and produce something your fellow classmates will love.

Little girls, maybe it’s safe to say, especially little girls, love to imagine being dressed like princesses in pretty gowns and dancing at night under twinkling lights. I think it’s wonderful that there are events where a little girl can get dressed up and dance like her big sister at the prom. Photo, The Perfect Pear
Here was one story in the news about a Daddy and Daughter Sweetheart Dance in Casper WY. A formal dance event for dads and daughters that raised money for a local charity.
There was also a 10th Annual Douglas County OR, Father Daughter Dance formal event with an Under Sea theme. The point of these events is to encourage the bond between fathers and daughters, which is a great thing.

Seniors from Palmdale High School CA, have a senior project where they give a Winter Ball for special education students. It is the only school in the Antelope Valley Union High School District that does this.
“The Winter Ball is an annual event that has been organized by seniors as part of their senior project, a graduation requirement.
‘We are just giving them a prom so they can do normal things like we get to do,” said Jessica Pierik, one of three seniors who planned the event. “They are just sweet little kids. I thought I could just help and make them happy.’”
This year’s formal event was attended by 80 special education students who had a memorable night. They had music, dancing and dinner. The attendees had their pictures taken and even crowned a king and queen with sashes, tiara and crown. How much did this cost?
“The students did not have to pay for anything. The school club Special Falcons raised money to cover the costs, Recentio said.” Maybe this will inspire other senior class clubs to do something this special.
If you’d like to help someone have a great prom or formal dance you might not be able to throw a free event but you can donate gowns and formal wear.. Check out this list and see if your area is listed, if not, check your local news to see if they announce a location to donate gowns.

Modeled after Project Runway this event, in Pensacola Florida, allows local designers to show off their design talent. The organizers paired designers up with award winning teen essay authors to work together to design the perfect prom gown with the teens as the clients. The designers have four weeks to create their client’s perfect gown from their descriptions.
“The second annual Pensacola News Journal competition, based on the hit Bravo TV show “Project Runway,” feature 10 local fashion designer wannabes vying for the title of Top Local Aspiring Fashion Designer. Two of the contestants are sisters competing as a team. Nine local teens have been chosen based on their short essays and they will get the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of having a dress custom designed and made for them.” Project Prom
The website has a lot of fun prom information beyond the contest itself. It must be exciting for the winning essay writers to receive a free prom gown. There is also a link on their website to contact a local service that provides free and low cost gowns for girls who can’t afford one of their own.
There are many other services like this around the country. Check out this list of services and if you know of one in your area that is not listed let me know. Everybody should have a chance at a wonderful prom night.

Lily’s personal style is fun for those of us who secretly wish we could wear gowns everywhere because she does just that. She is known for wearing new and vintage prom gowns with sneakers and gold jewelry. Her fashion sense not only got her noticed beyond her fast rising music career but landed her a deal with UK Retailer New Look, to design her own line. It’s going to be titled appropriately “Lily Loves” and will be available in May. Look for six dresses, two pairs of shoes and some brightly colored accessories.
So look for the release of the line and the cool ad campaign pictures they are promising. In the meantime you can keep up with Lily’s music and tour schedule here on her official website. Photo, LilyAllenMusic
